Watching the humpback whales in the Brazilian Carribean

This year, I went back to Arraial do Cabo for the second time, and this time, it was for something really special: a photography workshop focused on humpback whales. Just the thought of it had me so excited. I wished so much to capture those powerful jumps, the kind I saw in other people’s epic whale photos and videos.

The trip was organized by Gustavo Pedro, and in the end, we were a very small group, which made the whole experience even more cozy and chill. The landscapes were just as breathtaking as I remembered... that turquoise water still felt unreal.

Unfortunately, nature had its own plans. We only managed to go out by boat once, as the wind was too strong the second time, and the whales were in a relaxed mood. No big jumps, no acrobatics this time. I kept hoping to catch that perfect moment... a humpback launching out of the water, but they never really breached. I had also been secretly hoping to spot some orcas, but no luck there either.

Still, the experience was far from disappointing. What really impressed me was the eco-tourism agency organizing the tour. They were deeply committed to responsible whale watching, conservation, and education. They taught us how to observe the whales with respect and shared insights into the Baleia Jubarte Project, a Brazilian initiative dedicated to protecting these magnificent creatures and promoting sustainable tourism. It felt good to be part of something that mattered.

Going back to Arraial do Cabo, with its charm and stunning coastline, made my winter/summer season extra special. Even without the perfect whale shot, I left with beautiful memories, new inspiration, and a deeper sense of what it means to protect the environment.
