My second-ever mountain hike took me into the Retezat Mountains, and it was one of the most unforgettable experiences I’ve had outdoors so far. Along with two college friends, we started early in the morning from Râușor, armed with snacks and a healthy dose of optimism for a long day of hiking.
The hike took about 14 hours in total, but it never felt like a drag. As we ascended, the landscape transformed before our eyes, forests gave way to rugged alpine trails, and every step revealed ever more stunning views. I was genuinely amazed by the raw, beautiful nature that surrounded us, which filled me with a sense of wonder.
Reaching Retezat Peak was an accomplishment in itself, but what made the day even more memorable was our way back. We took a different, longer road through the forest, a path that, despite stretching our journey even further, left me feeling incredibly happy and content.
No overthinking or grand proclamations...just a really, really good hike with great people, a winding return through nature, and a day I won’t forget anytime soon.
