Arriving in Ecuador, I spent a few days in Quito... a dynamic, vibrant city surrounded by dramatic mountains. One of my favorite moments was going up to a viewpoint on a hill, where I could take in the sweeping views of the city stretched between valleys.
But I also have to say: I didn’t feel very safe, especially at night. The area I stayed in wasn’t the most comfortable, and I found myself avoiding walking alone after dark.
It was a good reminder that, in South America, if you don’t really know the city or its neighborhoods, it’s better to play it safe and avoid wandering around especially at night.
In places I know well, like Rio, for example, I move around easily because I’ve learned which areas are okay and which ones to avoid. But in a new city like Quito, caution felt necessary.
Still, I appreciated the energy of the place, and the landscape around Quito is stunning. Just one of those places that requires a bit more awareness.
